According to Wikipedia: 

“A Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation”. 

Phobia comes from the Greek word ‘Phobos’, which means fear or horror. People with any type of phobia feels an extreme fear of a specific thing or situation. Phobias are a common form of mental illness. 

General fear of a thing or Phobia to that thing are two different things. Phobia is an anxiety disorder and cause distress and can be a threat to life.

Research says that more than 30% of U.S. adults suffer from some type of phobia in their life. A person can have a fear of anything and any object can be phobic. So there are infinite types of Phobias are present in nature. 

According to some Medical association, Phobias are divided into three categories:

  • Social phobia: fears related to social situations
  • Agoraphobia:  fear of places or situations
  • Specific Phobia: fear of a specific thing or object.
